THE BURGLARYBUSTER SYSTEM
Much confusion exists today on how best to secure French Doors and so let’s get to the truth;
- Even when existing euro cylinder locks have been replaced with anti-snap and anti-bump euro cylinders your French Door is not fully secure without additional reinforcement.
- We are often told that an entrance door to the home does not require a second independent lock because the existing multi-point locking mechanism contained within the door provides additional security when the door is locked! This is a ridiculous argument because the euro cylinder lock actually controls the lock mechanism and if the euro cylinder is overcome so is the lock mechanism and entry can be gained simply by pushing or pulling the door open.
- Contrary to advice provided by various insurance companies you cannot fit a Chubb or Union 3 lever or 5 lever lock to a PVC French Door or any PVC entrance door.
- Sash Jammers used to reinforce windows are unsuitable for reinforcing French Doors as they are unlikely to sustain an attack.
- It is virtually impossible to use standard locks as a second independent lock to secure a French Door.
- Many people believe that because they now have the correct euro cylinder locks in place that the door is totally secure. (b) In the interest of residents’ health and safety while occupying the home, this belief must be challenged.
The Reality
An average of fifty-eight break-ins were recorded per day in Ireland during 2016 (CSO Statistics) and the vast majority of these by the opportunist burglar. Approx one in every two of these was through a door and the most vulnerable of these is the French Door. Approximately fourteen of these occurred when the home was occupied (Garda Information)and are described here as silent break-ins. Annually this amounts to a staggering total of 5,110 dangerous incidents which is to say the least outrageous.
Truth v Fiction
Most Irish residents grossly underestimate three important matters;
- The scale of the problem.
- That the types of security that were considered adequate for French Doors in the past tend to be insecure today, due to the advances of knowledge and increased aggression from burglars.
- For those confronted by a criminal in their own home and experiencing trauma at that time, the debilitating consequences can be extremely difficult to overcome and often everlasting.
Why French Doors are Vulnerable
- Over ninety-five-per-cent of all French Doors in Ireland open outwards and are located at the rear or side of the building. The French Door contains either one handle or two handles.
- When the single shoot bolts used to secure the non-active door leaf and located at the top and the bottom of the door are disengaged, and even when the door is locked, the door can be pulled open.
- The normal locks used in French doors are called euro cylinder locks. If the euro cylinders were installed prior to January 2014 they will need immediate replacing as it is likely they cost the door manufacturer less than €5 each and are flawed and enable the burglar to snap the barrel and often gain entry in less than twenty seconds. Furthermore, many of the replacement and more expensive anti-theft euro cylinders called anti-snap and anti-bump euro cylinders and installed since January 2014, are equally susceptible to forced entry by burglars.
- When the euro cylinder lock is by-passed and because this lock also controls the multi-lock mechanism, the door is now rendered void of security.
- Often while the door is locked and if the burglar can access and disengage the multi-lock mechanism in the centre of the door, this action can reverse the euro cylinder lock and the burglar can then open the door.
- A French Door consists of two door leafs that meet in the centre. However, along the vertical line where both door leafs meet in the centre, there is no frame. Therefore we have a double door containing only a single frame positioned on two sides and at the top of the door. As the door is not supported by a vertical PVC or timber frame in the centre of the door, the door is susceptible to being prised-open from outside.
- The multi-lock mechanism that runs vertically from top to bottom in the centre of the door on the active door leaf normally prevents the insertion of a secure secondary lock.
How the Burglar Thinks
- The burglar knows that by disengaging one lock only in any entrance door he will in most cases automatically gain entry to the home and often this takes less than twenty seconds.
- Intruder alarms and CCTV systems act as deterrents but do not prevent the opportunist burglar from entering your home.
- Most burglars know how they are getting out before they enter and so prefer to enter through a door.
- French Doors are normally positioned at the back or side of the house and frequently hidden from neighbours and particularly after dark.
- Burglars will normally know if you are in or not and seldom break glass when the home is occupied. (The device is discreetly positioned to avoid the temptation to break the glass).
- Instead, they seek silent ways to gain entry.
- One in every two break-ins is through a door.
- One in every four break-ins is in to an occupied home.
- The most dangerous of all incidents for occupants occur during a break-in to an occupied home.
- The burglar knows that of all doors in the home French doors are the most susceptible to a silent and quick attack because they contain numerous weaknesses;
